Preview: Ireland v Australia
The Republic of Ireland play their first international soccer game in Limerick’s Thomond Park on Wednesday evening. Ironically it is against a traditional rugby opponent – in the form of Australia. The games comes just days before the kick off of England and Scotland’s Premier Leagues which is sure to leave a number of cross-channel managers on edge.
Speaking ahead of the game on Monday, assistant manager Liam Brady denied the game was an unwelcome distraction for the players, saying “This is a hugely important game because we’re still in with a big chance of qualifying for the World Cup next year and this is preparation for the Cyprus game which will be upon us in three weeks time.”
Ireland should have an almost full squad to call from. Kevin Doyle looks set to be at least available to play half the game despite a pre-season injury which has hampered his preparations with Wolves. Leon Best appears to be the only worry after a foot injury has left him doubtful.
Both teams were unchanged in August’s FIFA rankings, Ireland remaining at 37th while Australia hold onto 16th. While Ireland are still battling hard to claim at least a play-off spot for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Australia have already qualified, topping their Asian qualifying group – ahead of Japan.
Ireland and Australia have only met once before in senior international football, Ireland won 2-1 in August 2003 at Lansdowne Road. Forgotten man Clinton Morrison scored the winner on that day after Ireland had fought back from behind to win.
