It was a very mixed weekend for the Republic of Ireland’s Premier League title hopefuls north and south of the border in Britain at the weekend.

Going into the weekend with a slim goal-difference advantage over Glasgow rivals Rangers, Celtic slipped up with a 0-0 draw away to Hibernian on Sunday afternoon – leaving Rangers two points clear with one round of games remaining. The result leaves Aiden McGeady’s chances of a fourth successive league winner’s medal now rescind and it is now Rangers’ title to lose in Sunday’s final round of games.

Darren O’Dea was an unused substitute for Celtic and at the moment he is one game short of the minimum of ten to earn a winner’s medal – should Celtic be crowned champions.

South of the border though it was a different story as Manchester United’s John O’Shea picked up his fourth league winner’s medal as the Red Devils picked up the one point they needed to claim a third successive English title.

Fellow Irish international Darron Gibson will not pick up a medal – having only played two league games for the club this year.
