Forde advances with Millwall to play-off final
Galway born goalkeeper David Forde saved a penalty as Millwall triumphed over Leeds United in their League One play-off semi-final in England.
Leading 1-0 from the first leg, Millwall were looking to hold onto that lead as they visited Elland Road. After a scoreless first half, Leeds won a penalty kick just five minutes into the second half but former Derry City keeper Forde pushed away Jermaine Beckford’s spot kick – pressurising too on the follow up with eventually went behind.
Leeds, including Irish international Jonathan Douglas, fought back and brought the tie level on aggregate in the 53rd minute thanks to Luciano Becchio.
However, Millwall rallied and retook the aggregate lead when Djimi Abdou forced the ball home just over 15 minutes from the end. They held on despite a late onslaught from the fallen giants of Leeds and now look forward to a Wembley final against either MK Dons or Scunthorpe United.
