Shay Given and Keith Andrews were the main Irish headline grabbers in Saturday’s English Premier League action. Manchester City – including Given, Richard Dunne and Stephen Ireland – continued their strong end to the domestic season. City won 3-1 at home against Blackburn Rovers and Given seemed set for a clean-sheet until Blackburn were awarded a late penalty.

However, Given saved the spot kick from El-Hadji Diouf but could only look on as Andrews turned the rebound home. Blackburn are still under some threat of relegation and Irish youngster Aaron Doran also got a run in the second half – joining the action from the bench at the same time as Andrews.

John O’Shea is nearing another Premier League winner’s medal as he featured in Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Middlesbrough. North of the border, Aiden McGeady is also in the running for a championship medal as Celtic remain top following a 3-1 win over Aberdeen at Pittodrie.

Graham Kavanagh did his bit to keep Carlisle in League One. He scored the opening goal as Carlisle won 2-0 against Millwall to avoid the drop to England’s fourth tier. Cliff Byrne scored for Scunthorpe in the closing minutes to clinch a play-off place at the expense of Tranmere Rovers. Scunthorpe now go into the League One play-offs.
