Irish managers make the headlines in weekend action
This weekend was mostly a positive one for Irish Footballers in the UK as the season rapidly approaches its conclusion.
Roy Keane got off to a winning start as manager of Ipswich Town in the English Championship. His Ipswich side won 3-0 away to Cardiff with Owen Garvan playing the whole game. Alan Quinn was a second half substitute while Alex Bruce’s season may have been ended prematurely by a dislocated thumb. Cardiff included Keane’s former international colleague Mark Kennedy while Stephen McPhail was a second half substitute.
Former Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy saw his Wolves side wrap up the Championship title with a 1-1 draw away to Barnsley. The outcome sees McCarthy back in the top flight of English management. Kevin Foley, Stephen Ward and Andy Keogh all played for Wolves while Jonathan Macken scored Barnsley’s goal.
Keith Fahey scored for Birmingham City as they chase automatic promotion back to the Premier League but the Blues will have to wait and see how they do against Reading next week after losing 2-1 at home to Preston North End. Also in action for the midlands side was Stephen Carr while Sean St. Ledger played for Preston.
Darren Potter grabbed a late equaliser to clinch a 1-1 draw for Sheffield Wednesday on their visit to Bristol City.
In the English top flight, Stephen Ireland scored what proved to be the winner as Manchester City won 2-1 on their trip to play Everton. The goal was Ireland’s thirteenth of the season as they cling to slim hopes of claiming European football next season. Shay Given and Richard Dunne also featured for City.
