McCarthy’s Wolves back in the big time
Managed by former Republic of Ireland captain and manager Mick McCarthy, Wolves today clinched promotion back to the top flight of English football – the Premier League. Wolves today claimed a 1-0 home win over Queen’s Park Rangers. McCarthy’s Wolves side includes a number of Irish players – Kevin Foley, Stephen Ward and Andy Keogh were all in action today.
Elsewhere, McCarthy’s former club Sunderland claimed an important win in their bid to stay in the top flight and exiled Irish midfielder Andy Reid was instrumental in setting up the game’s only goal, his cross resulting in Djibril Cisse’s goal in first half stoppage time. That goal gave Sunderland a 1-0 win over a Hull City side which included Kevin Kilbane and substitute Caleb Folan. Sunderland meanwhile also fielded Daryl Murphy as a late sub while Paul McShane remained on the bench for the whole game.
Ireland’s Liam Lawrence scored the only goal as a Stoke City side including three Irishmen beat a Blackburn side which included Keith Andrews. Joining Lawrence in midfield were Glenn Whelan and Rory Delap.
Aiden McGeady is still on track for a fourth successive Scottish Premier League winner’s medal as he played in Celtic’s 2-0 win over Aberdeen today. Celtic still hold a slight advantage on Glasgow rivals Rangers although the sides have to meet again before the season’s end. Assuming Rangers win their game against Hibernian on Sunday, the gap will be back down to one point.
