Stephen Ireland’s fantastic performances for Manchester City this season have been recognized with his listing on the shortlist for the English PFA’s young player of the year. Ireland’s nomination is all the more significant given that Manchester United have seven players among the twelve nominated for both the senior and young player awards.

The PFA award is voted on by fellow professionals and the awards will be handed out on 26th April in London.

Three Irish players have lifted the PFA senior award – Roy Keane (Man Utd – 1999/2000), Paul McGrath (Aston Villa – 1992/93) and Liam Brady (Arsenal – 1978/79). An Irish player has never won the young player award but the BBC website already lists Ireland as favourite for the gong.
