Doran makes Premiership debut
Aaron Doran’s appearance at Anfield today was one of the top stories involving an Irish Footballer in English action. The seventeen year old underage Irish international came on as a half-time substitute for Blackburn Rovers as they lost 4-0 to title chasing Liverpool in the morning game. Blackburn themselves are still battling to avoid the drop out of top flight football.
Andy O’Brien was an unlikely goalscorer but having been introduced at half time as a sub, saw his Bolton Wanderers side trail 4-0 at Stanford Bridge against Chelsea. The former Irish international defender turning the ball home on 70 minutes and sparking a revival which saw Bolton lose 4-3 despite some intense pressure on the Chelsea goal in the closing minutes.
Damien Duff played a crucial part as Newcastle United drew 1-1 with Stoke City also in the Premiership. His pin-point cross found the head of Andy Carroll for the vital 80th minute equaliser as Newcastle also fight to stay in top flight football.
Owen Garvan was on the score-sheet for Ipswich Town in the English Championship but couldn’t prevent his side from losing 3-1 to Doncaster Rovers. Alan Quinn and Alex Bruce were both on the bench for Ipswich with Quinn seeing action before the end. Dublin born Paul Heffernan was on the scoreboard for Doncaster – hitting their second of the day.
Alan Lee was among the goals for Norwich as they lost 2-1 to Swansea with Norwich also including Gary Doherty and Dave Mooney. Lee is currently on loan from Crystal Palace while former Longford Town and Cork City striker Mooney is on loan from the home of Irish strikers – Reading.
The result leaves Norwich in grave danger of relegation to the third tier of English football and their squad also includes the injured Wesley Hoolahan.
Jonathan Macken also scored in the Championship although his lead goal for Barnsley wasn’t enough as they drew 1-1 with Watford.
Gary Dicker was on the scoresheet for Brighton but it wasn’t enough for his side as they bid to avoid a drop to League 3 in England. Currently on loan from Stockport, former UCD man Dicker scored in the last minute but Brighton slipped to a 3-2 home defeat at the hands of Swindon Town.
