Former Republic of Ireland senior manager Brian Kerr is the new manager of the Faroe Islands national side.

Kerr managed the Irish senior side from 2003 to the end of 2005, replacing Mick McCarthy. After some time on the fringes of the game, Kerr returned to former club Saint Patrick’s Athletic in early 2007 as director of football but left the role little over a year later.

He achieved great success during his time as manager of Ireland’s underage sides – winning the under-16 and under-18 European Championships in 1998. That followed third place in the 1997 World Youth Championship.

The Faroes are currently bottom of group 7 in World Cup qualifying having picked up one point from four games. The group includes France who were in Ireland’s World Cup qualifying group during Kerr’s reign.

He has signed a two year deal and his role is “to further enhance and develop the Faroe Islands Football Associations structures surrounding player development, talent development and under-age national team development.”
