Four nations details announced
The FAI have today confirmed details of what is being called the “4 Associations’ Tournament” and it will be played in Dublin in 2011. The competition will be a round-robin (league) tournament featuring Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
Following a meeting between the four associations today, provisional dates have been announced for February and May of 2011 with the FAI hoping for bumper crowds – in addition to the Europa League Final (to be played at the Aviva Stadium).
The first two games of the tournament are set for 8th and 9th February with the remaining four games to be played 24th, 25th, 27th and 28th of May.
FAI chief executive John Delaney spoke excitedly of the news, “The Four Associations’ tournament will be the first ever tournament to be hosted by the FAI in Dublin. We expect huge numbers of fans to travel and alongside the UEFA Europa League Final which will also be hosted in Dublin in May, the tournament will be a major boost for the tourism and hospitality industry. Both events will make for a real festival of football and will provide a fitting celebration for Aviva Stadium which is on schedule for completion next year.”
