Irish international goalkeeper Shay Given was the hero tonight as he saved two penalties in a penalty shoot which saw Manchester City advance to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup. The English club eventually won out 4-3 on penalties after the tie had finished 2-2 on aggregate against Danish side AA Aalborg.

City travelled to Denmark leading 2-0 from the home leg but somehow conspired to surrender that lead by conceding twice in the closing six minutes of normal time. Thirty minutes of extra time provided little of note, leaving the game to be decided by spot kicks.

Given saved from the third and fifth kicks he faced while international team-mate Richard Dunne blasted home City’s fourth kick.

Stephen Ireland also took part in the game.
